		<description>A few years ago, Radical Media was developing a concept for German telecom company O2. They invited art and design students in Berlin to contribute “doodles” to the project, and by chance they discovered my work while they were looking at a friend's. Doodling was always one of my favorite pastimes, so I was pleased to contribute.

I brought in a set of drawings every 2-3 days for 2 weeks, doodling as I normally would: in pencils, ink, and ballpoint pens, while talking on the phone, or watching crime shows on TV.

Little did I know this little campaign would become a central part of the O2 brand. I ran into my drawings everywhere in the city: in advertisements at every bus stop, on O2's store windows, and on huge billboards at Potsdamer Platz. They even covered a few promotional automobiles in the art.

O2 World on Tour
[... more]

Friends and family called me and sent mails wherever they saw my doodles. I had been drawing these patterns for years already, so my style was unique and recognizable.

I felt quite fortunate to be part of such a visible campaign that people still remember well and talk about today.

o2 - Doodle directed by Edouard Salier

"Doodles are a great visual metaphor and represent the feeling of light heartedness which the new tariff concept is to communicate. In fact, the concept addresses everybody who uses a phone - no matter whether they are power callers or make occasional phone calls", says André Schloemer, Vice President Brand Management, Telefónica O2 Germany. The campaign was developed and implemented by the lead agency vccp Berlin and is focused on the diversity and fascination of the phone doodles.

"O2 o is a revolutionary step for O2. Therefore, the campaign had to be just as daring and large, but still down to earth", Oliver Frank, Creative Director, vccp Berlin, says about the O2 campaign which "is way beyond anything you have seen from O2 so far in view of its presentation and design."

The integrated campaign comprises above-the-line and below-the-line measures, including the point of sale and online as well as product PR and social media. O2 o will initially be shown on television in a 45-second image commercial immersing into the world of Doodles. Animated phone doodles which gradually develop a life of their
own answer the question raised at the beginning of the commercial: "What do you think of when you are on the phone?" The film was developed in cooperation with Radical Media Berlin and shot in Paris by director Edouard Salier who has excited the big international brands with his Motion Graphics. DEPECHE MODE - "Fragile Tension" from the album "Sounds Of The Universe" will be used for the O2 advertising campaign in Germany. &#62;&#62; Doodle Art: campaign for the new O2 o tariff

&#60;img src="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/3288881/PlakateO2doodle_2_Coll_640.jpg" width="640" height="454" width_o="952" height_o="676" src_o="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/3288881/PlakateO2doodle_2_Coll_o.jpg" data-mid="16892368"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/3288881/WeAds_O2doodle_Coll_640.jpg" width="640" height="681" width_o="793" height_o="845" src_o="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/3288881/WeAds_O2doodle_Coll_o.jpg" data-mid="16888353"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

[...]Moreover, countless Doodles in several motives are displayed in printed ads and particularly out of home on posters, mega posters as well as ad specials. The front pages of magazines were redesigned in Doodle style by scribbles made with blue biros in cooperation with the media agency Mindshare. In addition, entire underground stations in Hamburg and Berlin will be scribbled with blue drawings. Moreover, white house fronts will be embellished "live" with Doodles in some big cities. These "living posters" will be created in stages and are a novelty in Germany. Just as unique and also part of the comprehensive overall concept is the product name. André Schloemer adds: "The fact that we went all the way to use just one unique letter reflects our innovation and simplicity. The new concept O2 o exactly represents that approach." &#62;&#62; Doodle Art: campaign for the new O2 o tariff

Here is a bad phone pic I took before sending it in. It's one of the sketches/doodles I sent them, which ended to be one of their faves to be used in the quite big O2 doodles - campaign:

The girl on this illustration is not from a picture of myself, btw. but from a photo I've found a while ago (I think on Flickr). Unfortunately I've lost the source or the name of the girl or whereven I got that from. I saved it just for future reference/inspiration on my "inspire" folder. But if you are that girl or know where this is from, don't hesitate to drop me a line with the info, so I can add it here.

Merci!

One of my first collaborations with Kirsten Becken in 2008 or early 2009 was with this photo

I was thinking of a song I had listened on my iPod over and over again: (listen here, or here) Would? by Alice in Chains.

I think I heard that song for the first time when I was 12, and I still get goosebumps when I hear it.
Unlike my other works, here, I hardly put in the illustration what I actually felt for the song. For this one I thought more like interpreting the weird colourful 80ies than the darkness of the song.

However, here is another interpretation of Kirsten's photo, that I redrew completely though. I changed minimal details here and there till I got her to stare like "FREEZE!" :)

		<description>One of my big passions is to experiment with randomness of flowing ink. I usually use JHerbin or Rohrer &#38; Klingner inks, but I had excellent results with Waterman and Pelican too.

It all started with this one:
Candy (2006)

		<description>This is a collaboration with Mota Italic Gallery for the Project Capital - Berliner Buchstaben.

CAPITAL: Berliner Buchstaben:
[...] We have paired the typefaces of 27 Berlin-based type designers with the work of 27 local illustrators/designers/artists. This relatively small collection features the work of a wide variety of individuals—from life-long designers to recent graduates and from design ‘celebrities’ to students. Most participants are employed full time as type/graphic designers or illustrators, but for some, their work represented here is more of a passionate side project. Through these images, one can easily appreciate the diversity of the local design scene and get a taste of the current visual gestalt.[...]
— Mota Italic

As you can see I got the letter M in the font Marat, from the typedesigner Ludwig Übele.
The blobs were drawn with sharpies on paper, scanned and copypasted here and there around the M, so that the illustration melts with the typeface without "smothering" it.

		<description>This is an illustration collaboration I did for Kirsten Becken for the first part of the Team Project Plain I.
Plain I and Plain II got featured on PAGE magazine.

I find collaborations with photographers totally exciting, so I always agree to participate. For this one, I had a lot of time and so many ideas! The request was pretty much like this: "Take the picture that was assigned to you and add your own illustration style to it". I wasn't sure how much I was allowed to "interfere" with the photograph, so at first I sent a polite version of my end version, which you can see under the published version.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_full_640.jpg" width="640" height="1087" width_o="650" height_o="1104" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_full_o.jpg" data-mid="9989466"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Details:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail2_640.jpg" width="640" height="712" width_o="650" height_o="724" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail2_o.jpg" data-mid="9995393"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail3_640.jpg" width="640" height="357" width_o="650" height_o="363" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail3_o.jpg" data-mid="9995424"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail_640.jpg" width="640" height="702" width_o="650" height_o="713" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/KirstenB_detail_o.jpg" data-mid="9995427"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

the polite version of the sharpie-blobbs:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain3_softie_kl_640.jpg" width="640" height="1102" width_o="650" height_o="1120" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain3_softie_kl_o.jpg" data-mid="10052700"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Plain II
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain2_masque_kl_640.jpg" width="640" height="831" width_o="650" height_o="844" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain2_masque_kl_o.jpg" data-mid="10052677"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Details:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain2_masque_detail_640.jpg" width="640" height="558" width_o="650" height_o="567" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/808/1891579/plain2_masque_detail_o.jpg" data-mid="10051733"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

                                            - ❦ -

So yeah, that's what I did. I had a few ideas, but many of them didn't feel interesting enough to send them back to Kirsten.

Here's one of the alternatives that I didn't send:

Plain Alternative II

yes, pencils and pencils.

Thoughts, single words, lyrics or quotes that I find running through my head over and over again and dear feelings are usually a sign for me that they need to "get out" as an illustration on paper. And the character forms I draw change their usual appearance through the texture of the paper and/or the stroke of the pencil I'm using.
They are all drawn on 190g/qm thick paper without the use of transfer, transparent paper or a layout table. I draw and finish the illustration in one day.

		<description>Coffee is wonderful. I usually drink it for waking up and rarely for pleasure. And as there is always something left in the french press or bialetti stove-top coffee machine I started using it to make white paper more interesting. At least more interesting to me.

I terribly love working with coffee. It reacts differently with every kind of paper, brush or sponge.

A Memory, pencils on paper, and fusionned digitally with a big coffee stain I had done and scanned separately before.

Mademoiselle avec des lunettes rondes, the lady with the round glasses, was drawn with pencils on a
sheet of paper, where I dripped a big stain of coffee on. Was fun! I will do that again!

I'm Laura Serra, an illustrator, lettering artist, and translator living in Berlin. The child of Sardinian immigrants, I grew up on the border of Germany and France and spoke four languages before I could walk. But even before I was talking, I was drawing.
My work — made with pencil, ink, thread, markers, paint, pixels, or coffee — has always been influenced by two seemingly unrelated subjects: typography and portraiture, exploring the relationships between the character and curves of letters and faces. After six years of design education, I now live in Berlin, where I regularly exhibit my art and produce lettering and illustration for corporate and non-profit clients.

This site is a selection of my work, both personal and commissioned. I'm currently available for hire and am looking for an agent in germany and USA.
I speak Italian, Sardinian, English, German, and French. Contact me!

You can buy some of my work as art prints, tee shirts, iPhone skins, and more at society6, redbubble and artflakes.
